A low carb diet emphasizes foods that are low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat. Most people know the staples of the low carb diet: meat and cheese….but there can be so much more. Don’t get stuck in a low carb rut and then give up because you are tired of eating the same old thing every day. Here are some great ideas to keep your low carb snacks different but still easy.
CHEESE: Cheese is very portable and affordable. String cheese, cheese cubes, cheese squares and cottage cheese.
MEAT: Especially deli meats like turkey, ham, roast beef and chicken. These meats are easy to eat and very diverse in how they can be prepared. Beef jerky is also a great option!
NUTS: Nuts are probably the most portable low carb snack. You can literally take them anywhere. Peanuts, almonds, cashews and pecans are delicious alone, or paired with another snack.
VEGETABLES: There are a variety of vegetables that are low carb. Some require a little prep, and others none. Cauliflower, broccoli, cucumbers and bell peppers are just a few examples.
SPREADS: Sometimes these are overlooked. But spreads such as peanut butter, hazelnut spread and almond butter can be used on fruits and vegetables to add protein to your meal/snack which helps with feeling full faster.
EGGS: Eggs are unbeatable. Scrambled, fried or boiled, they are so versatile and can be used in so many dishes, it’s easy to find a different way to eat them everyday! They are also very inexpensive.
PEAS: When I say peas, you don’t necessary think of hummus. But hummus is basically chickpeas and oil. Edamame is another great pea/bean that is a great meal or snack.
CANNED MEATS: Canned tuna and canned chicken cannot be beat. It is high in protein, has no carbs and is very affordable. You can pair them with fruits or vegetables or even eat them by themselves.
Now these are foods that you can buy in their whole/raw form from the grocery store/farmer’s market. There are tons and tons of low carb/high protein pre-made snacks like bars and pre-packaged snacks. Eating low carb shouldn’t be difficult or expensive and DEFINITELY not boring!
